Why the FAA Is Recruiting Gamers With $155K Salaries
In an era when skills replace degrees as the hiring bar, air traffic control just became the first real test case.

A recruitment ad on the official YouTube channel of the U.S. Department of Transportation went viral. The video opens with the Xbox logo, cuts rapidly between gameplay footage and a techno beat, and ends with a single sentence.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is hiring air traffic controllers1 — and instead of a college degree, it wants to see your gaming skills. Average pay by year three is $155,000, roughly ₩200,000,000. A college degree? Not required.
It sounds like clever marketing. But behind this campaign lies a decade-long staffing crisis that hasn’t been solved, an accident three weeks ago that killed two pilots, and a fundamental shift in how we define “competence” itself.
🎮 Why Gamers, of All People?

Here’s the FAA’s logic. The core competencies an air traffic controller needs are simultaneous multitasking, spatial awareness, decision-making under pressure, and pattern recognition. And these four are exactly the skills that people who’ve spent years playing complex video games have already trained. The first-person point of view, commonly called POV, that gamers are intimately familiar with maps directly onto this kind of work.
This isn’t just a hunch. When the FAA surveyed 250 graduates of its 2024 academy class, only 2 said they weren’t gamers. In exit interviews, working controllers repeatedly said their gaming experience helped them make faster judgments and manage complex situations.
Here’s what’s worth noting. The FAA didn’t just pick “gamers” as a marketing target. It started from the fact that 75% of current controllers don’t have a college degree. Combine that with the statistic that 65% of American adults — more than 200 million people — play games regularly, and this starts to look like a declaration that the traditional hiring pipeline itself is being redesigned.
This isn’t even the first time. Back in 2021, under the Biden administration, the FAA ran a gamer-targeted recruitment campaign called “Level Up.” Five years later, the staffing shortage remains, and this time the FAA is coming in even harder.
✈️ The Real Crisis Inside the Control Tower
The numbers behind this campaign show why it’s more than marketing. According to a report the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) published in December 2025, the number of FAA controllers has fallen 6% over the past decade. Over the same period, flight volume rose 10%, reaching 30.8 million flights a year. As of the end of fiscal year 2025, there were 13,164 controllers on staff, against an FAA target of roughly 14,500 — a shortfall of more than 3,500.
How did it get this bad? The causes are compound. The government shutdowns2 of 2013 and 2018–2019 froze hiring and training, and the COVID-19 pandemic further scaled back training. In the fall of 2025, a 44-day budget lapse forced controllers to work without pay — during which a good number picked up Uber driving or delivery gigs on the side, or left the profession altogether.
And the most decisive problem: the hiring success rate is extremely low. Per the GAO’s analysis, only about 2% of applicants make it all the way through to final certification. Between the aptitude test, medical and security screening, 4 to 6 months of training at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City, and the on-the-job training that follows, certification takes 2 to 6 years. Even if 200,000 people apply, only a tiny fraction of them ever actually stand in a control tower.
💥 What the LaGuardia Collision Changed
11:37 p.m. on March 22, 2026, at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. Air Canada Express Flight 8646 was landing on Runway 4. At nearly the same moment, the controller cleared an airport fire truck — which was responding to a separate emergency — to cross that same runway. Seconds later, the controller radioed “stop” repeatedly, but it was too late. The aircraft, landing at over 150 km/h, collided with the fire truck, killing both pilots.
Only two controllers were on duty in the tower at the time, each covering two positions simultaneously. According to the NTSB’s3 investigation, the fire truck wasn’t equipped with a transponder4 that would let controllers track its position, and the airport’s ground surveillance system failed to generate any warning before the collision.
The controller’s radio transmission, recorded right after the crash, was later released to the public. When a Frontier Airlines pilot who witnessed the collision radioed, “That did not look good,” the controller replied, “I messed up.”
That single line captures a structural problem in miniature. It might look like an individual controller’s mistake. But the real problem is an environment where two people at night have to cover four positions while simultaneously handling two emergencies. Had staffing been adequate, this accident was likely preventable.
🔍 What “High Pay, No Degree” Reveals About the Labor Market
The FAA’s gamer recruitment drive isn’t just an aviation story. It’s part of a much bigger trend. In February 2025, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill eliminating degree requirements for federal contract positions. Under the Trump administration’s “Tech Force” hiring initiative, a degree isn’t required either. Big Tech companies like Google, IBM, and Apple have been dropping degree requirements for years already.
Here’s the core of it: the center of gravity in hiring is shifting from “what did you learn” to “what can you do.” For the FAA, that filter is the Air Traffic Skills Assessment (ATSA)5. Memory, spatial reasoning, logical decision-making, problem-solving under time pressure, multitasking simulations — this is a test of raw cognitive ability, not a degree.
What’s interesting is that data backs this approach up. Per the FAA, roughly 75% of current controllers reached their position without a traditional college degree. Conversely, having a degree doesn’t correlate with a higher score on the aptitude test either. In this profession, the correlation between a degree and job performance is essentially zero.
There’s something worth flagging here, though. Recruiting gamers may be an effective strategy, but the real bottleneck isn’t hiring — it’s retention. Controllers are mandated to work six days a week, ten hours a day. They’re still using radar and communications equipment built in the 1980s. The FAA is pushing a $30 billion equipment modernization effort, but Congress has only allocated $12.5 billion for it.
No matter how good the talent you recruit, if the system is built to grind people down, hiring is just pouring water into a leaking bucket.

This campaign is a textbook case of top-of-funnel optimization6. It’s effective at raising awareness and boosting applications, but the real bottleneck sits further down the funnel. In a system where only 2% of 200,000 applicants get certified, simply widening the top just creates more congestion at the academy training slots and on-the-job instructor capacity. Honestly, when I first heard this news, I thought of the movie Pixels — a bit of a B-movie, admittedly, where aliens invade Earth based on game data humanity once beamed into space, and a ragtag crew of gamers once dismissed as nerds save the day. There’s something of that “the kid who played games all day is now a pilot?” energy here.

It seems empirically reasonable that gamers’ cognitive abilities are useful for control work. But that’s not all a controller needs. Eight hours of sustained focus, psychological resilience under the weight of hundreds of lives, clear verbal communication — none of these are trained by gaming. In the end, this campaign treats a symptom, not the underlying cause. Unless the FAA also fixes the narrow training pipeline, the brutal working conditions, and the aging equipment, the same pattern will repeat no matter who it recruits.

Realistically, here’s how I’d sum it up:
- The FAA’s gamer recruitment campaign is a symbolic case of the broader shift from degree-based to skills-based hiring.
- But the essence of the air traffic control staffing crisis isn’t hiring — it’s the training bottleneck symbolized by that 2% conversion rate, and the brutal working conditions.
- The LaGuardia accident showed that this structural problem is no longer just a story told in numbers — it’s directly tied to real lives.
Applications opened on April 17, and the target of 8,000 has already been hit — right on schedule, as the FAA expected. The real question now is what happens next. How many of these applicants will actually make it to the control tower, and how long will the ones who do actually last?
